About Maccy

A small, friendly, creative and inclusive community, Macclesfield has much to offer those who live here and those that visit.

Located just 45 minutes drive from Adelaide’s CBD and accessible via Mount Barker, Echunga, Meadows and Strathalbyn, Macclesfield is popular amongst cyclists, motorcyclists, weekend wanderers and gourmets alike (just to name a few) who stop and enjoy the diversity in products, services and experiences that our town provides.

Named in honour of the Earl of Macclesfield, or “Maccy” as it is affectionately referred to by the locals, is situated amongst bush, farmland and vineyards in Battunga Country on the south-eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges, and is the source of the Angas River.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers in the early 1840s, this area was inhabited by the Peramangk people who called it ‘Kangowirranilla’, a place for water and kangaroos.

We acknowledge the deep feelings of attachment and relationship of first nations peoples have to this land and who cared for this land for some thousands of years before European settlement.
